Xerox's Green Printing Documents History at the DNC

  • 09/02/2008

Rhetoric and politics took center stage at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) last week, but behind the confetti and canvassing change was already in effect.

In a cinder block room that normally houses the Zamboni ice grooming machine for the Colorado Avalanche hockey team, 15 Xerox employees transformed the space into the base of operations for an environmentally friendly Xerox Print Shop that churned out the documents needed at the convention.

The area that the team used is normally houses the ice shavings from the Pepsi Arena, but through the convention they contained reams of Xerox paper; and the parking lot for the Zamboni was the temporary home to Xerox 4110™ copiers/printers and WorkCentre® 7655 color multifunction systems.

In addition, the Xerox Short-Term Rental team quickly created a second print shop at INVESCO Field, the site of Democratic candidate Barack Obama’s acceptance speech, which took place last Thursday night in front of more than 70,000 spectators.

As the preferred provider of document services, Xerox used its energy-efficient equipment, recycled paper and eco-friendly ink cartridges to manage the millions of documents printed during the convention. In fact, Xerox expected to turn out more than one million documents including speeches, press releases and daily “talking points” distributed to the more than 5000 delegates and 15,000 media representatives.

“At the convention, electing a candidate for the general election means a lot of prose, a lot of poise and a lot of paper. Xerox’s role is documenting history in the making,” said Doug Lord, president of Xerox’s United States Solutions Group. “We’re doing it in a way that supports the environmental commitment of the party and demonstrates our rich heritage of environmental sustainability.”

By aligning business innovation with environmental responsibility, Xerox’s short-term rental and event services is provided the DNC with digital printers, multifunction systems and High Yield Business Paper™ that supported the Host Committee’s commitment to green technology.

The convention print operations also used Xerox’s Emulsion Aggregation toner. As a result, the amount of toner needed was significantly reduced as nearly 100 percent of the product transfers to the paper. That translates into cost savings and reduced waste. The systems are also Energy Star® compliant and allow for duplex printing, which reduces the amount of paper needed for a print or copy job. Xerox is also provided its High Yield Business Paper™ with the digital devices.

In addition to assisting the DNC with its printing needs, Xerox is also responsible for all print shop operations at the Republican National Convention, which takes place in Minneapolis-Saint Paul from September 1-4.
